This week the Trump administration officially announced that it’s reversing another Obama-era executive order – this time it’s the DACA program, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. DACA-scuse me? You know it as the Dreamer program – essentially it’s a 2 year renewable visa for nearly 800,000 kids born in America from illegal immigrants, which protects them from being deported out of the country and allows them to work and study. Since the travel ban has been having its fair share of problems right from the get go, Trump has decided to have another go at crossing “hardline immigration policies” off his presidential to do list.
So what’s the feeling on the ground? Supporters of President Trump say the original program was unconstitutional because Obama bypassed Congress to get it up and running. Plus ‘Murica must protect its borders and these people are taking our jobs. Critics say this threatens the stability of hundreds of thousands of kids who have never known any other country, and who contribute a lot to society, the military and the economy. Plus it’s cruel and goes against American values. Trump says it’s up to Congress to fix America’s immigration problem, presumably so that he has someone else to blame if the whole thing goes kaput. And the dreamers themselves? You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one… who’s terrified about the future. Brace yourselves, protests are coming.
Ironically, DACA was dreamed up because Congress couldn’t get its sh** together on immigration the first time around. Plus, considering their recent failed attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare, outlook does not look good. So what else is on Congress’ post-summer to do list? Hurricane Harvey relief, raising the debt ceiling, agreeing on a budget and tax reform. That’s a lot for a fragmented and unhappy Congress to agree on. Watch this space.
