Happy Trumpiversary everyone! If you’re breathing a sigh of relief due to the fact that President Trump has not yet brought a nuclear war down on your head, remember that there are over 1000 more days to go – of Trump’s first term. But if you’re cheering on the fact that President Trump signed more bills into law in his first 100 days than the last three presidents, remember that that doesn't mean he got more done. It has been 100 days of gilded promises, executive orders, ethical conflicts, legal blunders and serial golfing. So does Trump’s report card say all A’s or does he get a big red F? Depends who you ask of course. Many conservatives argue he’s taken the first critical steps toward honoring his many winning campaign promises (think: repealing Obamacare, reforming taxes, improving infrastructure and rebuilding the military) and that the first 100 days are a good indication of where the Trump presidency is heading. Spoiler alert: liberals won’t love it.
So where the heck are the Democrats, you ask? Busy chalking up wins and patting themselves on the back – first their march outshone the inauguration, then their protests got the travel ban challenged in the courts, and then their united front helped to stall the healthcare reform bill. Democrats are cautiously optimistic, but the left doesn’t have many high-profile candidates to lean on for winning midterms in 2018, nor an obvious frontrunner to challenge Trump in 2020.
So what’s next, you ask? Well pretty soon Trump will venture overseas for the first time since becoming president, hopefully revealing exactly what he means when he speaks about his “America First” policy. Happy days. But perhaps the biggest surprise of 2017 so far is the fact that Trump has failed to make significant progress on most of his signature promises despite the GOP controlling all three branches of government. And in fact the biggest hurdles haven’t been Democrats, as expected, but infighting within Trump’s own party. So unless Trump starts using some of his mad dealmaker skillz on his allies, he’ll find his next 100 days just as frustrating and difficult as the first.
