Just when you thought the election was set in stone, the ghost of Clinton’s past emails continues to haunt her campaign. For those of you who are still interested in hearing about her damn emails, Director James Comey told Congress on Friday that the FBI is investigating newly discovered emails which may or may not have been sent to or from Hillary Clinton’s private server while she was Secretary of State. The FBI may or may not already have duplicates of these emails. These emails may or may not contain sensitive or classified information. And this may or may not affect their July recommendation that Clinton shouldn’t go to jail. In other words, there is no need to panic yet.
So where did the emails come from? Well the FBI is currently investigating the emails of Anthony Weiner (i.e. the scandal-plagued former Congressman) who is the estranged husband of Huma Abedin (i.e. Clinton’s right-hand woman). Comey didn’t want to be accused of hiding anything in an election dogged by “rigged” claims but now he’s being accused of a blatant double standard for apparently refusing to comment on Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia. Democrats are freaking out and Comey is under fire from the Justice Department over his timing, since government officials are supposed to stay quiet about political investigations so close to an election. And less than 2 weeks out from voting day, Clinton has made it clear that she does not approve this message.
On the one hand, it’s a good thing that the feds want to be more communicative and transparent. On the other hand the timing makes it look like they have a hidden agenda to get Trump elected. And despite no actual evidence of wrongdoing, Clinton looks more untrustworthy than ever. Donald Trump has been doing a victory dance all weekend, hoping that the smell of corruption will last right up until Election Day. But unlike the Trump Tapes this email story is not shocking enough to have a drastic impact on voters’ minds, which are largely made up on the subject of emails. And Clinton’s polls, while down, haven’t changed significantly enough to suggest a Trump presidency is definitely looming on the horizon. However her lead is still too narrow to guarantee a win, and at this point, anything is possible.
