Donald “The Victim” Trump is the man who cried “rigged”, but is he correct or just a premature sore loser? His supporters have been letting loose about stories of election fraud (think: dead voters, illegal immigrant voters, fake ballot papers or hacked electronic systems) without caring to provide any evidence. Trailing in the current national polls and plagued by accusations of sexual assault, an unshackled Trump is lashing out at his corrupt opponent, the biased media and the political establishment on both sides, seemingly happy to throw gasoline on the fire if it means taking everyone down with him.
Clinton is leading Trump by double digits in current national polls – this isn’t a landslide margin but he won’t leave anything to chance, telling supporters to make sure the election isn’t “stolen” from them. In fact, there have only been 31 cases of voter fraud out of 1 billion ballots cast in the last decade. Election offices are already expecting record voter turnout and now they have reluctantly become fact checkers as well, working hard to discredit the lies that Trump has been spreading. But his rhetoric is working and his angry Deplorables might just get out their pitchforks and torches come November.
Both Democratic and Republican leaders are frustrated with the rigged election talk, worried that it could potentially undermine the integrity of the entire political system, damage America’s global status as a legitimate democracy, or promote violence on or after Election Day. This all comes after a heated national debate about controversial voter ID laws, which have been struck down in a number of states for discriminating against minorities. And in a particularly hostile display of US-Russian relations, the Obama administration just accused Russia of meddling in the US election by deploying its state-sponsored hackers. But if the president really wanted to fix this problem maybe he should just sue Russia. After all, what’s the worst that could happen?
