Is it too late to get rid of Donald Trump? Republicans experiencing buyer’s remorse have been asking this question ever since the Hollywood Access tape was unearthed, showing Trump bragging about sexual assault. The mass exodus of Republican leaders and their endorsements is unprecedented, as is their serious assertion that Mike Pence should replace Trump on the presidential ticket. But even if that were possible, Trump supporter backlash could sink an already devastated Republican Party, and that could cost them the election.
So why isn’t it possible to replace Trump? Well for one thing, it’s kind of waaay too late to be having second thoughts about Trump, especially since his character flaws have been on display for decades. For another, getting Pence on the ballots instead isn’t possible because state deadlines have already passed. And let’s not forget about the 450,000 early birds who have already voted in this election, who wouldn’t want their vote to become invalid. So what about using the Electoral College electors to cast votes for Pence instead of Trump? Well over 30 states have rules which force electors to vote according to the majority will of their voters. Of the other states, “faithless” electors who have voted contrarily have been extremely few and far between historically. So basically it’s a long-shot, but it shows just how desperate Republicans have become and just how toxic they consider Trump to be.
At this point, the Electoral College map points to the Democrats winning by a large margin in November – the magic number of course being 270 electoral votes (out of 538). The current math is mostly due to Trump's tape, his constant Twitter wars and some dismal debate performances, rather than a “rigged” process as he claims. Now Trump will need to pull off a victory in every single battleground state, plus an extra Democratic state (potentially Pennsylvania) to become president. Things might change closer to Election Day but that’s still a lot to ask, even for an unshackled genius such as Trump.
