Who won the debate you ask? Depends how long you stayed glued to your television. Donald Trump decided the best defense was an upfront offense and fired all his missiles in the first half hour. But once the dust cleared, Hillary Clinton found her feet and methodically destroyed her opponent with hard facts, sly smirks and a body wiggle. Though to be honest, moderator Lester Holt gave his fair share of hard knocks to Trump’s contradictory claims, and even Trump had a hand in his own destruction. Overall the debate will make very little difference in the presidential election campaign – both candidates performed to their supporters’ expectations, and neither made much headway with undecided voters.
Trump had one message, Clinton is a failed politician; Clinton had one message, Trump is not fit for the presidency. By all accounts Clinton is the one who crushed it (eventually) during the debate, thanks to her new strategy of subtly baiting Trump and watching him dig his own grave. Trump’s constant (read: sexist) interruptions, lack of preparation and increasingly incoherent rants were in stark contrast to Clinton’s controlled demeanor and on-message, detailed answers; she looked presidential next to his immaturity.
However the surefire winners of the debate were definitely the meme creators, who had their pick from Trump’s endless sniffling and water guzzling, to Clinton’s whoop and jiggle. With expectations set historically low, all Trump had to do was behave well enough to convince undecided voters he’s got the right temperament for the presidency. It’s hard to tell if he failed to prepare or if his preparations failed, but Trump was off his game and over the course of just 90 minutes his bullying behavior alienated moderates, minorities, women and 400 pound hackers. Talking loud and saying little might get you ahead in the primaries but it isn’t a path to the White House. The first set went to Trump, but Clinton easily won the match.
