A forty year old unmarried Mormon from Utah, NeverTrumper and former CIA spy launched his presidential campaign this week. Wait, what? Yep, independent conservative Evan McMullin – whose personal motto appears to be “it’s never too late to do the right thing” – is coming into this race pretty darn late in order to give voters an alternative option to Crooked Hillary and Dishonest Donald. But in this case Evan actually is too late because in order to have even a snowball’s hope in hell he will need to compete in as many states as possible, but he’s already missed the ballot deadlines in more than half of the country. Just another election day in 2016.
Evan McWho you say? The fact that you had to Google him is just one of the many substantial hurdles he’s facing in this race. The former CIA operative, businessman, GOP policy director and unlikely presidential candidate has never held elective office before and he has zero national profile. He’s pro-life, pro small government, anti-Obamacare, pro-trade and pro border security. He plans to contest Utah and other Mormon-heavy states, where polls show they aren’t big Trump fans. And he apparently already has the support of key players in the GOP’s anti-Trump movement and serious Republican donors and fundraisers. Whether that’s true remains to be seen.
So can he win? Hahaha...nope. But what about the fact that Clinton and Trump are so unpopular you ask? Yeah, still nope. Here’s why: 1) there’s less than 100 days to go until Election Day, which leaves very little time to fundraise, get on the ballots and frankly, get people to remember Evan McSpy’s name; 2) there are few protest voters that he can appeal to who haven’t already sided with either Jill Stein from the Green Party or Gary Johnson from the Libertarian Party; 3) even IF he manages to either win Utah or split the Republican vote there (his likeliest of all the unlikely options), and with all other states being red or blue as predicted, the electoral math says that creates a path to a President Clinton. NeverTrumpers think that any shot to deny Trump the presidency is better than no shot at all. Reasonable enough. But it’s still no shot at all.
