Politics is a family business. At least, that’s how Donald Trump is approaching it. His three oldest kids and his son-in-law have been playing an increasingly visible role in his campaign messaging, his staffing choices and most recently his VP pick. They appear on TV interviews with Trump, defend him on social media and accompany their dad to high-level meetings. But just how much leverage do the Trump children have over their father, and how much lobbying power could they wield as the potential first family?
Choosing a safe, stabilizing political insider for his running mate instead of a brash, similarly-minded VP candidate shows a willingness to listen to the advice of those around him who recognize that a general election requires some balancing of the ticket. His loyal family cabinet already play senior executive roles in his corporate businesses, and their similar roles in the campaign are a reflection of the trust and power that Trump invests in them. But this is also perhaps a reflection of the fact that there really aren’t enough political professionals on hand to help Trump run a smoother campaign in the face of general election pressures and hurdles.
Spouses or children of politicians coming into political roles is not a new concept, and many families take on increasing and public roles during political campaigns. And there is no doubt that the extremely photogenic, clearly intelligent and fiercely protective Trump family greatly enhances the appeal of Trump himself, something that the campaign has been eager to exploit, especially with public appearances. So if you feel you haven’t seen enough of the Trump brood lately, tune into next week’s Republican convention, where they have prime speaking slots. But despite speculation that some of his children may have official roles in a Trump administration, it is very obvious that at the end of the day Trump is Trump, and will always have the final say in any decision he makes.
