Have you tried turning it off and on again? The Republican response to this week’s FBI decision to give Hillary Clinton a free pass on her “careless” emails after a year of searching for criminal activity. You know these emails as the ones that probably maybe had classified information in them but for which no direct evidence has yet been found. The Clinton camp’s sigh of relief could be heard all over the country but Republicans aren’t handling their disappointment very well and say that the FBI should keep investigating until they find something incriminating.
After hearing the FBI recommendation, Donald Trump immediately called the system rigged and polls show a majority of Americans strongly consider Clinton to be guilty. Rather than being cleared and the issue resolved, after this week Clinton appears to look more guilty than ever. And like a really annoying email chain that just goes on and on, the State Department has un-suspended its own internal investigation, so this won’t be the last time you hear about her “damn” emails.
Of course the Republicans yelling “Groundhog Day!” over this issue doesn’t do them any favors – Clinton’s skeletons are well-known and trying to create a new scandal to hopefully derail her campaign shows how much Trumpism has taken hold of the GOP. However Clinton's initial reluctance to confront the controversy and her failure to put it behind her has only intensified the political fallout. And regardless of whether voters see her as a victim of her own arrogance or as a criminal whose fame and fortune helped her walk away from an indictment, none of this is likely to help her raise her trustworthiness levels.
