You may have heard something about a flock of Americans fleeing north during the winter of the election. No? Well Canada’s immigration website crashed on Super Tuesday as the number of people contemplating leaving the country increased in direct proportion to the rising odds of a Trump presidency. On the other hand, a huge republican turnout helped turn Donald Trump’s consistent lead into a gaping chasm as he claimed victories in seven more states, showing that enthusiasm for making America great again is not just contained within Chris Christie.
Unfortunately, unenthusiastic turnout on the Democratic front meant Bernie Sanders didn’t have a very super day, as he was unable to mobilise huge crowds of young people as promised. Sanders has made it clear that he will continue his campaign and he is still drawing donations and crowds, so it’s possible that when the race moves away from the south he may pick up more states. However Hillary Clinton’s path to the nomination is starting to feel inevitable thanks to her strong performance on Super Tuesday, especially among African American voters. In the end, Sanders’ campaign may just bern itself out.
Those within the anti-Trump movement are throwing a Super Tantrum after being convinced that Jeb Bush’s followers would rally behind Marco Rubio, but a disappointing single-state win has left Rubio with an almost impossible path to the nomination. If he doesn’t win his home state of Florida in two weeks, he will have to withdraw from the race and Ted Cruz will be left as the only viable alternative. So, can Trump win the nomination? Absolutely, especially if future primaries follow the same pattern as previous ones. But is he the presumptive nominee? Not yet as there are still (literally) thousands of delegates left to be won, so keep an eye on New York, Ohio, Florida and California especially. But never fear, the Canada immigration website is back up and running so you can still contemplate that move, eh.
